Freedom Thinker
A poem about unlearning the noise and coming back to yourself
Happy National Poetry Month! As a poet, I am so excited to share my teachings and love through poetry this week.
Poetry has been so healing for me 💖 a way to express myself creatively. Pouring deep emotions and love into my work. I was inspired by another writer, Jacquie Verbal and her piece about free thinking. Check her article out.
Free thinking means trusting my intuition and following my heart. It means speaking my truth and taking up space in a world that constantly encourages us to be the same. Free thinking is loving myself fully and unlearning the ways that keep me trapped.
I hope you enjoy this piece.
Freedom Thinker
What does it mean to be a free thinker?
This question really had me shook.
Am I a free thinker?
I sat in meditation
Asking myself this question
Tons of information flooded my mind
So many ways of thinking,
Philosophy,
Tricks and tips,
Videos,
Books,
Movies,
Music,
Others’ thoughts
All influencing us in every which way → so am I really thinking for myself, or am I just following the narrative of another?
What is my story?
What do I believe in?
What do I stand for?
Knowing bits and pieces of who we are
Sometimes unconsciously subscribing
To the “normal”
So I asked
Am I a free thinker?
Oppression,
Conditioning from the system
Got us trapped
Survival
Paying bills
Catching our breath when we can
And I sit in stillness
In the silence
In the solitude
To listen to the freedom thinker
Within
The true one that knows
Who I truly am
I ask → who is Hazel?
Who is she truly?
Flashes of little me
Running around in the backyard
Playing, laughing in my joy
I heard…
Come back tomorrow, and you’ll know more
So am I a free thinker?
Yes
And
Also unlearning
The conditioning
Keeping me trapped in the box
My truth will set me free
Every day I show up
Every day I love deeper
Every day I remind myself to keep going
The more I sit
The more I understand
Free thinking happens over time
I unlearn to remember
The truth of who I am
And as I remember
I share this with you
Shine bright
Take up space
Dress up
Be kind
Share your thoughts
Be vulnerable
And be open
The truth will set you free
Written during an evening of self-love — dim lighting, quiet, and deep reflection.
